Description

1859 Seated Dollar, MS64
Scarce in Upper Mint State Grades

1859 $1 OC-2, R.2, MS64 PCGS. Osburn-Cushing Die State b/a. The bottom horizontal shield line on the reverse is seen outside the left-side shield border, but not between the borders. This is a brilliant and frosty near-Gem Uncirculated example on the obverse, with a swath of gold toning on the reverse. Both sides show minimal abrasions and no heavy marks whatsoever. The strike weakens on a few stars and briefly at Liberty's top hair strands. The 1859 Philadelphia issue is one of the overlooked and underappreciated dates in the series. Most of the 255,700-piece mintage was exported to the Orient, never to return.(Registry values: N4719)
