    Description

    1859-S Dollar, AU50
    Low-Mintage, Popular Branch Mint Issue

1859-S $1 AU50 NGC. OC-1, R.2. Ex: Osburn-Cushing Reference Collection. Die State b/c. Plate coin for the 1859-S OC-1 variety in the new Osburn-Cushing reference book. The first San Francisco silver dollar issue had a low mintage of 20,000 pieces from two die marriages. Historically, it was believed most of the mintage went to the Orient, but that scenario may not be accurate. Surviving examples are surprisingly available, mostly in the VF to AU grade range. The few Mint State specimens are primarily in the lower levels. Golden-gray surfaces of this AU example display hints of light reddish-tan, along with considerable luster in the recessed areas. Both sides show nicely defined motifs and reveal no significant marks. Census: 10 in 50, 71 finer (1/18).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 24YZ, PCGS# 6948)

    Weight: 26.73 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
