Description
Remarkable 1859-S Seated Dollar MS62
1859-S $1 MS62 NGC. Breen-5462. This coin comes from an early die state of the Breen-5462 die set, with repunching evident on the 18 in the date. While the San Francisco Mint struck its first gold dollar in 1854, the year it opened, its first silver dollar issue would not come until 1859, five years later. The 1859-S dollars, 20,000 pieces in all, mostly made their way overseas through American-Oriental trade channels, and most examples either found the melting pot or encountered heavy wear. The unworn representative offered here is an uncommonly well preserved survivor. The strike is sharp throughout, unlike many examples that show weakness on the devices, and a veil of vibrant orange, magenta, blue, and violet patina drapes the luminous surfaces. A number of light, wispy abrasions in the fields and on the devices account for the grade, though their impact on the coin's visual appeal is minor.
