Description

1861 Seated Liberty Dollar, MS64+
Bold Strike, Nice Luster

1861 $1 MS64+ PCGS. The 1861 Seated Liberty dollar claims a mintage of 77,500 pieces. Unlike silver dollars of earlier years, the 1861 was not used primarily as an international trade coin. While some examples were exported, a considerable number remained in this country. It seems that many of the coins that remained in domestic holdings were later melted to provide silver for subsidiary coinage. The 1861 is an elusive date in the Seated dollar series, especially in high grade.

This high-end Choice specimen exhibits much sharper detail than usually seen on this issue. The well-preserved surfaces display subtle hints of golden-brown and lavender-gray toning, with only minor signs of contact. Population: 24 in 64 (3 in 64+), 5 finer (2/14).(Registry values: N4719)
