Description

Marvelous MS64 1866 Motto Dollar
Many Prooflike Characteristics

1866 $1 Motto MS64 PCGS. CAC. At first glance, this first-year With Motto Seated dollar could be mistaken for a proof, for it has great field-to-device contrast and readily apparent flashiness to the fields. Closer inspection, however, reveals that the mirror effect is not deep, particularly between the stripes of the shield, and the strike at upper obverse and lower reverse is far softer than that seen on proofs of the time. As a Mint State coin, of course, this near-Gem is a marvel, richly toned with blue-to-violet outer patina and peach-to-gold interiors with a more silvery influence on the well-frosted devices. Population: 15 in 64, 8 finer (1/12).(Registry values: N4719)
