Description
1866 With Motto Dollar, MS64
Colorful With Above-Average Eye Appeal
1866 $1 Motto, OC-1, R.2, MS64 PCGS. CAC. This near-Gem is a
marvel, richly toned with blue-to-violet outer patina and
peach-to-gold interiors with a more silvery influence on the
well-frosted devices. At first glance, this superlative specimen
could be mistaken for a proof, for it has great field-to-device
contrast and readily apparent flashiness to the fields. Closer
inspection, however, reveals that the mirror effect is not deep,
particularly between the stripes of the shield, and the strike at
upper obverse and lower reverse is far softer than that seen on
proofs of the time. While 65% of examples of this date survive in
AU or Mint State condition, the issue becomes rare at the Gem
level, making this significantly above average near-Gem an
excellent candidate for the specialist.Ex: New York Signature (Heritage, 3/2012), lot 3549.(Registry values: N4719)
