    Description

    1867 Seated Dollar, MS65
    Very Rare in High Grades

1867 $1 MS65 NGC. The Bowers-Borckardt dollar reference explains the opportunity presented in the early and mid-1860s for the Seated dollar in the China trade. The standard Mexican eight reales was altered during the brief reign of Emperor Maximilian (1864-1867). His portrait was not widely recognized in the Orient as was the longstanding Cap and Rays design. This confusion and lack of trust gave the United States an opportunity to increase its market share in China, and as a result mintages of silver dollars increased and many thousands were shipped overseas. However, even though production increased substantially, few pieces were set aside domestically, especially in high grade. This Gem displays the usual bright fields, created by die striations. Each side has intermixed golden-rose and gray patina with a blue accent at the margins. The reverse is sharply struck, but the obverse shows uniform softness of high point definition. Census: 4 in 65, 0 finer (4/12).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 24ZA, PCGS# 6960)
