Description

Elusive Toned Near-Gem
1868 Seated Liberty Dollar

1868 $1 MS64 NGC. CAC. The 1868 Seated dollar is rarer than its mintage of 162,000 business strikes would indicate. David Bowers, in Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, indicates that many were exported, accounting for their relative rarity today. Indeed, perusal of the NGC/PCGS population data shows 43 Mint State coins, a number of which are undoubtedly resubmissions.
Whispers of electric-blue, purple, and russet toning concentrate at the margins of this near-Gem specimen, and the strike is virtually complete. Luminous surfaces reveal just a few minute marks that preclude Gem status. The NGC Census Report shows four pieces in MS64 with six finer, including one Prooflike example (11/11).(Registry values: N4719)
