Description

1869 Seated Dollar, MS62
Elusive Philadelphia Issue

1869 $1 Misplaced Date and Repunched Date, FS-301, MS62 PCGS Secure. This interesting Cherrypickers' variety exhibits repunching on the lower edges of the 1 and 8 in the date, with the top of a misplaced numeral (likely a 6) in the dentils below the primary 6. Other repunched date varieties exist for this issue, though this is arguably the most intriguing. As a date, this issue had a fairly substantial mintage of more than 423,000 coins, but the attrition rate was very high and today, survivors in any grade are elusive, with Mint State pieces being particularly so.

This representative is boldly struck, with attractive semiprooflike fields and traces of light golden color on each side. Surface flaws are surprisingly few for the grade, the most prominent being an old hit in the field near star 1, which is well-hidden near the rim. Population: 13 in 62, 20 finer (8/14).
