Description
Choice AU 1870-CC Seated Dollar
Historic First Carson City Issue
1870-CC $1 AU55 NGC. Variety 2-E. With likely more than a
dash of poetic license, Rusty Goe describes the mintage of the
first CC-mint Seated dollars: "A month later, on February 10, 1870,
it was time for the sound of the coin press to finally roar and
from morning until night that big 12-ton Morgan and Orr clanged out
2,303 new 1870-CC Seated Liberty silver dollars. [Mint
Superintendent Abraham] Curry had already planned out who the first
coin was going to be reserved for: the number one citizen in the
United States, President Ulysses S. Grant."This Choice AU survivor could be from that first day's mintage, as only 12,462 pieces were coined in all. This piece shows only light wear on the high points of the deep gray-green surfaces, with no singular abrasions and good eye appeal.(Registry values: N2998)
