1870-CC Seated Dollar, MS64 Prooflike
Sole-Finest Prooflike Example
Compelling First-Year CC Issue

1870-CC $1 MS64 Prooflike NGC. OC-1, Low R.4. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. The 2025 Guide Book reports the 1870-CC mintage as 11,758 pieces representing the first silver dollars and the first denomination struck at the Carson City Mint. The mintage may not include an additional 704 pieces struck in early February 1870 as keepsakes, Congressional samples, and pocket pieces. Carson City dignitaries and Mint officials were eager to commemorate the first federal coinage produced at the Carson City Mint. Strong local demand for souvenirs existed throughout the Comstock region and Nevada state. A group of early strike coins were taken to Washington D.C. as samples, where ongoing debate continued about the Carson City Mint's long-term viability and funding.

Many of the early strikes were well-produced and largely prooflike, although transport in bags offered little protection from bagmarks and abrasions. Four obverse dies combined with six reverse dies for a total of nine known varieties, struck in diminishing quantities throughout the first six months of the year. The present example comes from the OC-1 die pair, utilizing the "Eyelash Obverse," with a distinctive die line visible just left of Liberty's eye. This die was later sent to the San Francisco Mint to strike the famous 1870-S Seated dollars, of which only nine confirmed examples survive.

Prior to the San Francisco Mint taking possession of the die, the OC-1 1870-CC silver dollar with the Eyelash Obverse struck the sole finest 1870-CC Seated dollar awarded NGC's MS64 Prooflike grade. To our knowledge, this coin is unseen at auction for at least the last 18 or so years. Likewise, the coin was unseen by Carson City authority Rusty Goe in his detailed 1870-CC discussion in the recent (2020) reference, The Confident Carson City Coin Collector, Volume I. Goe notes the existence of an 1870-CC Seated dollar certified MS64PL NGC and to this day it remains the only example so-graded, with none certified finer at the MS64 level either in Prooflike or non-Prooflike format. This coin is deserving of a prominent place alongside the few Choice Mint State 1870-CC Seated dollars -- an impressive list including the former Battle Born Collection/Dell Loy Hansen coin, the former Fairfield Collection/Eugene Gardner specimen, and the former Bareford Collection example.

This example from The Pelican Bay Collection, Part II is fully prooflike with an exceptionally sharp strike for the first-year Carson City issue. Smoothly frosted motifs are crisply defined, including the obverse stars and Liberty's uppermost hair strands. The reverse is remarkably sharp including the upper wing edges and the always problematic right (facing) leg and claw. A few small marks speak to the coin's Old West origin, including a pair of short reeding marks on Liberty's leg near the shield and a small, oblong divot on the opposite upper leg near the pole. Effusive mint luster flashes throughout both sides of this near-Gem. Original champagne and bluish-gray patina complement the frost-white central devices and flatter the mirrored fields. NGC Census 1 in 64 Prooflike, 0 finer (4/25).
