Description

1871 Seated Dollar, Lightly Toned MS65
Ex: Jack Lee, Mostly Prooflike Fields

1871 $1 OC-5, R.2, MS65 NGC. With slightly more than 1 million coins produced, it is little wonder that the 1871 ranks among the most available Seated dollars . While numerous coins were probably exported, enough were produced to guarantee that domestic economic channels would see their fair share during the 1870s. A total of 17 known varieties exist for this high-mintage issue and examples are easily obtained in high grades from AU58 through MS64. Nonetheless, the 1871 is a condition rarity in the finer Mint State grades, with two MS66 pieces topping the Condition Census including all varieties. This MS65 example is the former Jack Lee coin -- last seen at auction some 20 years ago. It remains in its NGC holder from that appearance. Satin reflectivity displays champagne-gold color especially at the margins, illuminated by flashy mint luster. A speckling of reddish-gold accents visits both sides, with lilac-silver fields surrounding frosted central motifs. The sharp strike weakens slightly at the upper stars and Liberty's head, although the reverse is uniformly sharp. A few tiny marks are entirely consistent with the assigned grade. NGC Census: 5 in 65, 1 finer (4/25).
