Choice AU 1872-S Silver Dollar

1872-S $1 AU55 NGC. The best way to appreciate the rarity of the 1872-S is to compare its mintage with its Philadelphia counterpart. More than 1.1 million 1872 Seated dollars were struck, but the 1872-S mintage was 9,000 pieces. Probably, a portion of the 1872-S production was eventually melted to provide bullion for Trade dollars. This untoned example has ample luster and only a single mentionable mark, a thin line near the left (facing) shoulder. The obverse has a pair of faint, slender, and minutely granular tan streaks. Census: 12 in 55, 20 finer (5/10).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2008), lot 1859, which realized $4,600.(Registry values: N1793)
