1873 Silver Dollar, Nearly Prooflike
Brilliant, Reflective Gem

1873 $1 MS65 NGC. In 1873, Seated dollars were for all practical purposes invisible to the public. Used mainly for occasional specie payments or as de facto "trade" dollars, Seated dollars were obsolete long before the Mint unceremoniously put an end to the design after a brief 1873 mintage of 293,000 pieces.

The Act of February 12, 1873 (called by some the Crime of '73") provided the impetus for an official Trade dollar. The new Trade dollars offered slightly higher silver content and became the coin of choice for international trade with Asia, while gold dollars and paper money served as dollars in local commerce. It would be five more years before the Morgan dollar supplanted all others in both local and international trade.

As a result, Mint State Seated dollars are very scarce throughout the series and Gems are rare regardless of date. Even the most-available mintages (the 1859-O and 1860-O issues) show remarkably few Gem examples. As a result, any MS65 or finer Seated dollar is a bona fide auction highlight. The final-year 1873 issue is especially so.

This example is brilliant with nearly full prooflike surfaces. Frosted central motifs show a sharp strike except at Liberty's head and the right-hand stars, which are softly defined. Very few marks or abrasions are visible anywhere on the coin -- an amazing feat, given the wide-open, reflective fields and broad, exposed square rims that surround both sides.

NGC has certified just two prooflike coins for the entire Seated dollar series, and this current example is very nearly the third such coin -- an untoned and no-questions Gem, with exceptional smooth-mirrored appeal. Census: 5 in 65, 2 finer (9/15).(Registry values: N7079)
