Description

1873-CC Seated Liberty Dollar, AU50
Challenging Low-Mintage Key
Final Date of Design

1873-CC $1 AU50 NGC. OC-1, High R.4. Ex: Rian's Bequest. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/b, with no clashing on the obverse and some light clash marks connecting the upper leaf and the wing on the reverse. The Coinage Act of 1873 abolished the standard silver dollar, but not before the Carson City Mint struck 2,300 examples of the old Seated Liberty design in January and February of that year. A single pair of dies was used to strike all the coins. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was used previously to strike the OC-8 variety in 1870. It seems likely that some of the small mintage was never released into circulation. The coins held back in government storage were probably melted, with the silver used in planchets for the new Trade dollars, which were struck later in the year. In his popular new reference, The Confident Carson City Coin Collector, Rusty Goe estimates the surviving population at 85-100 examples in all grades, making the 1873-CC the rarest Seated Liberty dollar from the Carson City Mint. PCGS and NGC have combined to certify nine coins at the AU50 grade level (10/21), but Goe estimates only seven or eight of these submission events represent different coins.

The present coin is an impressive AU50 representative from the last of the Carson City Seated dollar issues. The design elements are well-struck, with modest wear crossing the high points. The pleasing lavender-gray surfaces exhibit light, shallow marks that are consistent with a brief time in circulation on each side. In general, a highly attractive example of this popular branch mint key. Census: 2 in 50, 12 finer (10/21).
