1873-CC Dollar, Original AU53
Rare in All Grades

1873-CC $1 AU53 PCGS. Only 2,300 pieces were struck of the 1873-CC silver dollar. The reason for the low original mintage was that the mints were getting ready to produce the Trade dollar, which was also first minted in 1873. The Carson City Mint saw two deliveries of the Seated dollar: 1,000 pieces in January and 1,300 coins in March. Whether a large number of these were melted remains controversial among numismatists.

The number of 1873-CC dollars that may have been melted notwithstanding, the 1873-CC is the rarest Carson City silver dollar issue. Rusty Goe estimates in The Mint on Carson Street that 80 to 100 examples survive in all grades, of which only four to six are in Mint State. PCGS and NGC combined have graded about 100 pieces, seven of which are Uncirculated.

Both sides of this AU53 example display low- to medium-intensity bluish-gray, violet, and soft gold patination on original surfaces. Traces of luster reside in the protected areas, and the design elements exhibit strong definition. The letters in LIBERTY are sharp except for softness in the middle crossbar of B, and all letters in the reverse motto stands out. The hair atop Liberty's head is a tad ill-defined, as typically seen. Close inspection reveals a few unobtrusive, minute marks that would be expected for a large silver coin that saw brief circulation. A small mark in the middle of the lower-right loop of the 8 in the date may help identify the coin. This is a great example of this rare date that will be an excellent addition to a high-grade Seated Liberty dollar collection. Population: 1 in 53, 12 finer (11/13).
