Description

1873-CC Seated Dollar, AU55
The Rare Final Issue

1873-CC $1 AU55 PCGS. The Carson City Mint coined 126,800 silver dollars in 1873, but only 2,300 of those coins were the Seated Liberty design. The balance were examples of the new Trade dollar that began production as the earlier Seated design was discontinued. All of the 1873-CC Seated dollars were coined in the first quarter of the year, 1,000 in January and 1,300 in March. It is believed that most of the 1873-CC Seated dollars were melted soon after they were minted.

Although not the lowest mintage Carson City Seated dollar, the 1873-CC is the rarest, and it holds that distinction across all grades. PCGS has certified 82 of these, and 109 examples of the lower mintage 1871-CC Seated dollar. Estimates of the actual number of 1873-CC Seated dollars that exist today varies depending on the source consulted. The combined total population at PCGS and NGC is 108 coins, and that figure undoubtedly includes resubmissions. Most estimates place the total population of different coins in the range of 40 to 60 pieces. The cataloger tends toward the higher number.

The actual population is less important than the availability, especially for the advanced collector who seeks a high grade coin. Only 32 of the 108 certified coins grade AU50 or finer, and the two grading companies have only examined nine coins grading AU55 and 11 finer pieces. Over the last 22 years of our Permanent Auction Archives, we have only offered four examples in AU55, and just six finer pieces.

The present piece is a lovely Choice AU example with light silver-gray surfaces. Both sides retain considerable satin mint luster and the surfaces are essentially mark free with reflective fields. This is an exceptional example for the grade, and deserves a place in the finest cabinet. Population: 7 in 55, 5 finer (7/15).(Registry values: N7079)
