Description
1873-CC Seated Dollar, MS61
Condition Census Example
1873-CC $1 MS61 NGC. OC-1, High R.4. Osburn-Cushing Die
State b/b. Carson City Seated dollars are a rare subset within the
Seated dollar design in general, with the 1873-CC particularly
challenging. Much of its 2,300-piece mintage was melted in
preparation for Trade dollar production. Only a portion of the
small mintage was released into circulation prior to legislation
intended to halt production of silver dollars. The Coinage Act was
passed in February 1873, but it did not take effect until April 1.
Thus, the 1,300 Carson City silver dollars struck during the month
of March were legally issued. Researchers estimate that only 750 to
1,000 examples out of the 2,300 1872-CC mintage actually left the
Mint. Only the ultra-low mintage 1871-CC issue challenges the
1873-CC for rarity honors among the four Carson City silver dollar
issues and the 1873-CC remains a prime rarity in the Seated Liberty
dollar series overall. The reverse die was previously used to
strike 1870-CC silver dollars (varieties OC-6 and OC-7). The
obverse die is in its sole use. All stars are needle-sharp. While
the 1871-CC's lower mintage always attracts collectors, the 1873-CC
is almost equally elusive and receives similar price support at
auction when in Uncirculated grades. The toning pattern and underlying prooflikeness of the present coin are remarkably similar to another example -- the Bareford-Sonnheim-Richmond-Brock piece -- but this is clearly a different coin, last seen at auction when Heritage sold it in our July 2006 Dallas Signature Auction as lot 407, which realized $82,225. One cannot help but wonder if these two MS61 NGC coins were preserved at a similar time under similar conditions long ago.
This sharply struck example displays semiprooflike, silver fields beneath light-gold and dappled warm-gray toning. LIBERTY is sharper at the obverse shield than often seen on 1873-CC dollars, and the reverse strike is equally bold. Faint die clashing is seen within the lower-left reverse shield and above the top leaf pair to the wing. Obverse die clashing exists below Liberty's pole arm. A few small marks and hairlines are present as expected for the grade. Gracefully aged and largely undisturbed from its mintage more than 150 years ago, this coin remains tied at the lower end on the Condition Census. We expect its reappearance after more than 19 years will thrill Seated dollar and Carson City collectors alike. Anticipate many bids and widespread interest when this 1873-CC dollar -- still in its original NGC holder -- is called. NGC Census: 4 in 61, 2 finer (12/25).
