Description

1873-CC Seated Dollar, XF45
Sharp Motifs, Lightly Toned

1873-CC $1 XF45 ANACS. The reported mintage of 2,300 pieces is misleading because more than half of the production may have been melted, as speculated by those who use grading events as an indicator of the actual distribution of an issue. As a result, the 1873-CC dollar is known as the rarest Carson City date of the series, and it is an indisputably challenging acquisition in any grade.

This example displays smooth, minimally marked fields and bold motifs. The well-deserved Choice XF grade is confirmed by a light, silver-gray color with wheat-gold overtones. The semiprooflike surfaces are free of all but a few minor marks, which are muted by the slight wear before being pulled from circulation -- no doubt, put aside by a collector who was aware of its considerable rarity even before the turn of the century.(Registry values: N4719)
