    1873-CC Seated Dollar, XF45
Rarest Carson City Issue of the Series

1873-CC $1 XF45 NGC. The final production year for Carson City Seated Liberty dollars was more of a whimper than a bang. Only 2,300 pieces of the 1873-CC silver dollar were struck, many of which might have been quickly melted as speculated by David Bowers, who suggests in his Encyclopedia that based on the ratio of surviving pieces (40 to 60 in all grades) no more than 750 to 1,000 coins reached channels of commerce.

It is difficult to find this date in any condition, much less a problem-free and attractive XF45. This specimen is an even-keel dove-gray, with unexpectedly smooth fields. Apparently, the moderate wear took the bite out of abrasions that often appear more noticeable on higher-grade Seated dollars. A little coppery iridescence shadows the devices, which appear well-struck in all areas with a reasonably defined LIBERTY on the shield. The rarity of this sought-after silver dollar issue is well-known to Seated Liberty collectors, and it will be hotly pursued as the sale approaches. Census: 4 in 45, 13 finer (11/13).
