Description

1855 Silver Dollar, MS61
Better Low-Mintage Date

1855 $1 OC-1, High R.3, MS61 NGC. During 1855, the Philadelphia Mint was busy striking new tenor silver coinage, from the half dime to the half dollar. Those Arrows issues had mintages in the millions, but it was a different story for the silver dollar, which remained at the old tenor and had a production of just 26,000 pieces. Many were melted by speculators. Needless to say, Mint State examples are rare. This minimally marked representative displays light to medium straw-gold and silver-gray toning. Luster illuminates design elements. Census: 5 in 61, 10 finer (7/25).(Registry values: N4719)
