HALF DIME.Variety: V-4, Small O reverse. This variety is readily identified by the date placement to the left. Star 9 is repunched, and the tip of the shield is centered over the 8 in the date. The dies are slightly rotated, a common situation for this issue.
Population Data (8/15): PCGS reports two in MS65 and none finer. The other PCGS example resides in the Law/Simpson collection. NGC shows The NGC census counts two in MS65, two MS66, and one MS67+. Three of the four MS65 submissions have CAC green approval stickers.
Heritage Commentary: The 1839-O half dime is fertile ground for the specialist, collectible and rich in varieties. Jack Marston, in collaboration with other New Orleans aficionados, identified 13 die marriages in his 2011 study published in the Gobrecht Journal (issue 112). Marston traced die shipments to New Orleans and demonstrated the use of single dies over multiple years.
Consignor Commentary: According to Al Blythe this is a common date, but few seem to have been submitted to PCGS, where only two MS65s are atop the chart.
