Description

Bold 1849 Half Dime, MS67 ★

1849 H10C MS67 ★ NGC. V-2. A tiny die defect connects the top and bottom parts of the 6, and there is a tiny, dotlike die defect between stars 10 and 11. On the reverse, a small die crack runs from the lower rim, upward through the olive branch stem and lower leaf quadruplet, to the right side of (DI)M(E). The major die cracks Valentine mentions are unseen, but other slight ones are present, especially over the F in OF and the R in AMERICA. This leads us to believe this is an early-die state coin. Indeed, the appearance is fresh throughout, with marvelous ice-blue and rose patina, a bold, nearly full strike, and no visible contact. A piece justly deserving the NGC Star rating. This coin, freshly graded at NGC, is the only MS67 coin, with one MS68 finer (10/09).(Registry values: N1)
