Description

1849/6 Overdate Half Dime, MS64
Very Rare at This Grade Level

1849 H10C Repunched Date MS64 PCGS. CAC. V-1, FS-301. This CAC-approved half dime is a brilliant, silver-gray example with only a hint of color underlining TAT on the reverse. A few scattered ticks are consistent with the grade, and the relief is strong; the stars, digits, and letters were deeply impressed on the dies.

Variety: V-1, listed in the Cherrypicker's Guide as FS-301. Specialists disagree whether this variety is an 1849/8, 1849/9, or 1849/6. The curved digit remnant to the west of the lower loop of the 9 inspires varied interpretations.

Population Data (8/15): The PCGS population for all 1849/6 half dimes is six pieces in MS64 and five finer examples, all MS65. The NGC census for the FS-301 variety is six pieces in MS64 and nine coins higher.

Heritage Commentary: Tom DeLorey presented analysis of the 1849 overdate half dimes in the Gobrecht Journal (issue 33). DeLorey felt all such pieces were 1849/6s but acknowledged disagreements with fellow experts Bill Fivaz and Kam Ahwash.
