Description
1850-O Half Dime, Fully Struck MS63
1850-O H10C MS63 NGC. V-2. Peach-orange and lavender tones color this otherwise brilliant, softly lustrous Select O-mint half dime. The devices are fully struck, and the typically mushy dentils are completely delineated on both sides. Light clash marks occur in the upper obverse fields. A splendid representative of the type.Variety: Valentine-2, with a Large O mintmark. Die cracks encompass the obverse stars and extend from the serifs of the U in UNITED to the rims. There is a small die defect between stars 10 and 11.
Population Data (9/15): NGC reports 10 submitted in MS63 and 13 finer. PCGS has seen four Select submissions and 10 finer.
Heritage Commentary: Half dime output reached 690,000 coins at the New Orleans Mint in 1850. A.G. Heaton's A Treatise on the Coinage of the United States Branch Mints (1893) explains: "The 1850 has a large O and a small o, the latter being very rare." All Mint State survivors rare, regardless of mintmark.(Registry values: N1793)
