Description

1855-O Arrows Half Dime
Beautifully Preserved Gem

1855-O H10C Arrows MS65 PCGS. CAC. V-1A. A thin die crack connecting star 7, the head, star 8, the cap, and stars 9-13 identifies the later die state of this sole die variety. This issue being produced in New Orleans no doubt accounts for its scarcity in high grades (Breen describes this issue as being "very rare in Mint State"), as Southern coinage circulated extensively and was seldom set aside for future collectors. It likely also accounts for the die rust (from a pitted die), as the New Orleans climate was hazardous to the surfaces of steel working dies. The moderately toned surfaces of the piece here offered exhibit varying shades of golden-gray, violet, and sea-green toning. This is a well-struck, attractive example of this scarce O-mint issue. Population: 9 in 65, 2 finer (5/14).
Ex: Pittsburgh Signature (Heritage, 8/2004), lot 5632.
