Intriguing 1856 Half Dime, MS66
1856 H10C MS66 NGC. High date. The date is placed high in the space below the base, and would actually be joined to the base except for the curved, cut-outs that accommodate the tops of each digit. Both sides of this frosty, iridescent Premium Gem are well-struck, except for the borders that are missing nearly all of the dentils.We are unable to explain the peculiar border appearance. A hub problem would yield dentil-less borders on one side or the other, but not on both dies. A filled die would normally affect one die, or might affect both dies, but would probably have some adverse affect on other details as well. This leaves a striking problem as the likely source of the undetailed border, but what striking problem would only affect the borders, leaving all remaining details sharp? Perhaps this is a topic for a advanced student to address.(Registry values: N1793)
