1858 Half Dime, MS67
Sharply Struck Example
1858 H10C MS67 NGC. CAC. V-1. Well-struck and nearly
mark-free with little of the frequently seen central softness of
this date. This Superb Gem displays excellent luster and gorgeous
deep purple-rose toning on both sides. A few faint clash marks
appear in the upper reverse field.Variety: V-1. The shield tip points to the left edge of the flag in 1, while the pendant is aligned with the right edge of the nearly closed 5. The date is high within the field between the base and rim.
Population Data (8/15): NGC counts 28 grading events in MS67 (three MS67 ★ ) and four in MS68 (one MS68 ★ ). PCGS enumerates 15 in MS67 (one MS67+) and one MS68 finer.
Heritage Commentary: Breen's Encyclopedia notes that the hub was retouched for Philadelphia and New Orleans half dimes of 1857 and 1858, and for New Orleans issues of 1859. The most visible effect is the defect at the innermost point of star 3.
