Description

1859 Half Dime, MS67 ★
High-End Type Coin

1859 H10C MS67 ★ NGC. A conditionally rare Superb Gem example of this important Seated half dime issue, which shows an obverse design that was modified by Anthony Paquet. The arms of Liberty are slender in relation to Gobrecht's version, and each star on the obverse has a hollow center rather than the raised center of earlier issues. Many collectors consider this a distinct one-year type coin.

The present example is semiprooflike and untoned, showing strike weakness only on the upper-left wreath. The Star designation is shared by only one other coin in this lofty grade. Census: 15 in 67 (2 in 67 ), 4 finer (5/18).
Ex: Denver Signature (Heritage, 8/2006), lot 5117, which realized $3,450; Central States Signature (Heritage, 4-5/2009), lot 49, which realized $2,760.
