Description

Patinated 1859 Half Dime, MS68

1859 H10C MS68 NGC. This magnificently patinated half dime has blended fire-red and sun-gold centers with vibrant electric-blue borders. The strike is pleasing although slightly incomplete on the seated Liberty. The sole post-strike imperfections are two tiny marks near star 11. The 1859 is the sole issue of its design subtype, distinguished by hollow stars and a different rendition of Liberty by Paquet. The obverse was later paired with a Cereal Wreath reverse for the 1859 and 1860 "transitional" patterns. Plentiful in VF and lower grades, the 1859 Legend Reverse is moderately scarce in Mint State and unknown above the MS68 level. Census: 4 in 68, 0 finer (7/11).
