Description
1860 Transitional Half Dime, Toned MS67
Among the Finest Known
1860 H10C Transitional, Judd-267, Pollock-315, R.4, MS67
NGC. Not actually a pattern, but since it was issued these
so-called transitional half dimes have been considered along with
patterns, but have been collected in the larger sense with other
Seated half dimes. These pieces were created by Mint Director James
Ross Snowden as "trade bait" for coins lacking from the Mint
Collection. Actually, Snowden ordered them made, it was Anthony
Paquet who actually created them. The With Stars obverse was
carried over from 1859 and paired with the reverse of 1860. The
diagnostic die scratch is easily seen angling upward from the left
base of the rock on the obverse. The bright, lustrous surfaces
display deep blue toning over most of each side that is encircled
by a thin ring of bright crimson around the margins. Extraordinary
quality. Census: 4 in 67 (1 in 67+), 1 finer (4/18).From The Reilly Cody Collection.
