Description

    Well-Known 1860 Transitional Half Dime, MS62
    The So-Called 'Nationless' Coin

1860 H10C Transitional MS62 NGC. Judd-267, Pollock-315, R.4. Long included in the pattern series, the transitional half dime is neither a pattern nor a regular issue. It was a curiosity struck by Mint Director James Ross Snowden as "trade bait" to enhance the Mint Collection. The old starred obverse by Anthony Paquet was paired with the new 1860 reverse. The result was a coin that lacked mention of the issuing authority, thus the sobriquet a "nationless" coin.
All transitional half dimes show a pronounced diagonal die scratch on the lower left portion of the rock. Although this piece was struck as a business strike, the fields are nicely mirrored and flash through the deep layers of gray, blue, and rose toning. The strike is irregular, and light hairlines are evident beneath the toning on each side. Census: 4 in 62, 46 finer (1/10). (NGC ID# 2346, PCGS# 4373)

    Weight: 1.24 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
