Description

1860 Transitional Half Dime, MS65
Judd-267, The 'Coin Without a Country'

1860 H10C Transitional MS65 PCGS. Judd-267, Pollock-315, R.4. It is estimated that 100 examples of this curious issue were produced, all in circulation strike format. The old With Stars obverse was muled with the new reverse of 1860; thus creating a coin with no stated national identity. Undoubtedly they were produced for distribution to collectors in an attempt to obtain pieces for the U.S. Mint Collection. This Gem displays the diagnostic obverse die scratch from the left base of Liberty's rock to the rim. The surfaces are satiny and pristine with a moderate overlay of smoky-gray patina. A little softly impressed near the upper obverse and lower reverse borders.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 10/2001), lot 5897.
