1860 'Transitional' Half Dime, MS66
Judd-267, Remarkably Toned
1860 H10C Transitional MS66 NGC. CAC. Judd-267, Pollock-315,
R.4. This is the well-known "coin without a country" half dime,
also known as a "transitional" variety, although it was a rarity
created for the coin trade by Mint Director Snowden. On the regular
issue 1860, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA was moved from the
reverse to the obverse. Judd-267 pairs the former obverse and new
reverse, omitting the country name. The fields display heavy die
striations and, of course, the diagnostic die scratch is present
from the back of the rock to the nearby denticles. Weakly defined,
as usually seen, each side shows light pastel iridescence.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2346, PCGS# 4373, Greysheet# 3787)
