1861/0 FS-301 Half Dime, MS67
Tied for Finest Certified

1861/0 H10C MS67 PCGS. FS-301. Mystery and intrigue surround the 1861/0 overdate half dimes. There are four different die varieties known, and each has an identical overdate, leading variety expert Bill Fivaz to suggest that it was the four-digit logotype that was overdated, as opposed to four individual overdated dies. In the March 1986 issue of The Gobrecht Journal, Fivaz wrote: "I'm firmly convinced that a four digit logo punch was used to prepare the date and that it was the logo punch that was overdated."
The example offered here, which is tied with one other coin for the finest certified example (9/11), has all of the same characteristics as every other 1861/0 overdate, although it also shows a difference, in that the date is doubled below, rather than above on some other varieties. In The Cherrypickers' Guide, Fivaz and J.T. Stanton state that this "is one of the top five varieties for the series, with more demand than supply."
This Superb Gem has brilliant silver luster with pristine surfaces and nearly full design motifs. Both sides exhibit considerable white mint frost, with peripheral reddish-gold toning. It is a remarkable coin for the Seated Liberty half dime specialist.(Registry values: P4)
