Description
1862 H10C MS65 PCGS. After specie payments were suspended in late 1860, the hoarding of gold and silver coins became widespread. However, obviously not all were exported or melted. More than a hundred Gems are known of this date with another hundred or so in higher grades, indicating numerous examples were set aside and never returned to circulation after the War was over. This is a splendidly preserved example with original surfaces. Both sides have deep, variegated scarlet and cobalt-blue toning with strong underlying mint luster. Both sides are die clashed, but it is more apparent on the obverse. The design elements are strongly struck throughout.
