    Description

    1863 Half Dime, MS68
    Tied for Finest Known

1863 H10C MS68 NGC. CAC. V-1. This richly toned Superb Gem exhibits a full spectrum of color, mixing burgundy, gold, and azure tones to full effect. The obverse legend is boldly struck, but, like the other MS68 piece that appeared in the Gardner III sale, the first three letters of LIBERTY are a touch soft. Both sides display luster consistent with the lofty technical grade, and the CAC endorsement confirms the overall eye appeal.

Variety: There is only one variety for this issue, V-1, which exhibits repunching in the first two digits of the date.

Population Data (9/15): PCGS and NGC each reports three examples in MS68 and none finer, unsurprisingly. Four of those six submissions have the CAC approval.

Heritage Commentary: This splendid half dime will no doubt appeal to collectors of the finest known pieces, but there is also an opportunity here for a half dime specialist to reach for a special coin, one that would be the centerpiece of any half dime set.

    Provenance: Purchased from Joseph O'Connor (11/2003).(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 234C, PCGS# 4382)

    Weight: 1.24 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
