Description

1864-S Half Dime, MS66
Tied for Finest Known

1864-S H10C MS66 NGC. V-1. Original toning is the hallmark of this Premium Gem, showing obverse shades of deep russet and olive. The reverse is lighter with rose at the periphery and blue-green scattered about the remainder. The surfaces are exceptionally clean and free of any distracting blemishes. Luster penetrates the rich toning throughout, and the eye appeal is plentiful.

Variety: V-1 is the only variety for the 1864-S. The date is vertically placed in the middle of the exergue, while the mintmark is slightly left of the bowknot.

Population Data (9/15): NGC and PCGS report, respectively, five and six submitted in MS66 with none finer at either service.

Heritage Commentary: Half dimes are perhaps the most collectible of all Liberty Seated denominations, accessibly priced and hosting a good assortment of varieties. What better way to start such a set than with a finest known example?

Consignor Commentary: Another coin about which Valentine and Blythe had little to say, other than that most examples were softly struck. That is somewhat the case here, with Liberty's figure slightly rounded, but there is enough detail still present that the coin would qualify for a "full head" designation. This piece, struck from lightly clashed dies, is tied for top honors at NGC with four other coins, and is attractively toned with no distracting spots or marks.

Provenance: Purchased from Joseph O'Connor (11/2003).(Registry values: N1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 234F, PCGS# 4385, Greysheet# 3827)
