Exceptional MS66 1864-S Half Dime
1864-S H10C MS66 PCGS. CAC. In spite of relatively large mintages, in this case 90,000 pieces, S-mint half dimes are seldom seen in high grades. In fact, they are seldom seen in any grade. The West Coast needed small denomination coinage, a need that went back to the earliest days of the Gold Rush. To further complicate matters, many half dimes were soldered on the back and used as buttons. This is an exceptionally well-preserved piece that has thick mint luster and light gray patina surrounded by occasional darker tints of golden and russet at the borders. Sharply struck also.
