Description

1865 Half Dime, MS67+
Second-Finest at NGC

1865 H10C MS67+ NGC. Light rose-red toning adorns pristine semiprooflike surfaces. Most of this Superb Gem is well struck, though the lower left portion of Liberty's shield is incomplete, as well as a small area of the wreath directly opposite. Surpassed by only a single example, an MS68 NGC dime from our July 2017 Summer FUN Signature. The H in HALF and the D in DIME exhibit minor die doubling. Since silver coins did not circulate (except in the far West) during the final year of the Civil War, the 1865 half dime has a very low mintage. Only 13,000 pieces were coined for commerce, along with 500 proofs. Fractional currency circulated in place of Seated denominations into the mid-1870s. Census: 6 in 67 (1 in 67+), 1 finer (11/21).(Registry values: N1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 234G, PCGS# 4386, Greysheet# 3793)
