Stunning 1839 No Drapery Half Dollar, MS63

1839 50C No Drapery MS63 PCGS. The half dollar was the last of five denominations to receive Christian Gobrecht's neoclassical Seated Liberty design. The No Drapery style lacks drapery folds extending from Liberty's left elbow to the knee, but a second diagnostic is that the left edge of the boulder is much closer to star 1 than on the Drapery version. As a first-year issue and a one-year type, No Drapery half dollars are always in demand, but Mint State examples are rare. A couple of shallow abrasions to the right of Liberty and a small spot above I in UNITED are noted, but neither stands out. Both sides display stunning aquamarine and blue toning, particularly on the reverse, with apricot-tinted silver in the centers and around the stars. There is some softness of strike in the center devices, along with a considerable number of parallel roller marks on the center obverse, but the overall appearance is stunning. PCGS has graded just 10 coins finer (8/08).
