Description
1839 No Drapery Half, MS64
Scarce One-Year Transitional Type
1839 50C No Drapery MS64 PCGS. This was a transitional year
for half dollars, with coinage of the Capped Bust, Reeded Edge
coins starting the new year at the second Philadelphia Mint. Next
were the Liberty Seated, No Drapery coins, as the present Choice
Mint State specimen illustrates, and finally, the Liberty Seated,
With Drapery coins were struck late in the year. The obverse design
was reworked between the No Drapery and With Drapery coins, far
more so than the addition of a little material at the elbow might
suggest. The rock to the left of the obverse shield is larger on
the No Drapery coins, and there are other subtle differences. The 1839 No Drapery half dollars are rare in higher grades. The mintage is reported as 100,000 coins, and only three PCGS certified specimens are graded higher than this example. NGC has certified a small number of higher grade pieces in addition to those that PCGS has examined.
Despite its significance at the time of issue, relatively few pieces were spared from circulation, and perhaps only a few dozen Uncirculated coins are extant. This desirable Mint State representative is notable for its fresh, original appearance, fully lustrous beneath splashes of copper-gold and blue iridescence. The strike is generally well-executed, although there is noticeable deficiency on the eagle's left (facing) leg and talons. Population: 9 in 64, 3 finer (6/13).(Registry values: N7079)
