Description

1839 No Drapery Half, An Important One-Year Type

1839 50C No Drapery AU58 NGC. This year is the only one in the entire Seated Half Dollar series that the Mint purposely produced coins with no drapery below Liberty's right (facing) elbow. As such, the present near-Mint survivor should be of obvious importance to type collectors. Both sides are well struck in virtually all areas with slightly muted, steel-gray, sea-green, and golden-rose colors that are most vibrant around the obverse border. Moderately abraded in the obverse field with an interesting die crack (as struck) from the right reverse rim at 4 o'clock.
From the Peter Martinez Collection.
