Description

Premium Quality 1840 Reverse of 1839 Seated Half Dollar

1840 50C Reverse of 1839 MS65 PCGS. With an original mintage of 1.4 million pieces, the 1840 Reverse of 1839 (or Small Letters, per the 2001 Guide Book) is not a scarce coin in an absolute sense. Gems are, however, of the utmost rarity, and this coin is one of only five MS65 examples known to PCGS, with a paltry three pieces finer (6/01). The surfaces are originally toned in mottled reddish-orange and blue colors that are more extensively distributed over the reverse. The devices are mostly well struck, but some softness of definition over the highpoints and near the upper obverse border are noted as a matter of course. Grade-limiting abrasions are all but nonexistent.
From the Eric A. Kreuter Collection.
