Rich Multicolor Toning
1840 50C Small Letters, WB-101, Die Pair 5, R.3, MS64 NGC.
Lavishly toned in fire-red and mauve with a blush of straw-gold on
each side. Crisply struck and lustrous. A moderately abraded
representative of the briefly-issued Small Letters subtype, which
is more available than its rare Medium Letters counterpart. Census:
10 in 64 (2 in 64+), 14 finer (8/25).Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2007), lot 1530.
