Description

1840-O 50C --Cleaned--ANACS. AU Details, Net XF45. WB-104. Wiley Obverse 2. Large Mintmark. As noted in Wiley-Bugert, "Although collectively this is the commonest of the mintmark size varieties, a few specific large O marriages are individually much rarer than any of the (other major) varieties." This obverse die is paired with a reverse from 1838, thus making it possible to prove that the 1840 with the Reverse of 1838 was indeed struck in the New Orleans Mint. Showing the slight softness typical of New Orleans coinage, the cleaned surfaces are partially subdued by light golden toning that deepens to a rich golden-rose and cobalt-blue at the margins.
