Description

1844 50C MS63 PCGS. WB-101, Normal Date. This piece offers considerably more eye appeal than might be expected for the Select Mint State grade assigned. The lustrous surfaces show a bold strike, quite close to full, with reflective fields and silvery centers that cede to shades of amber and cinnamon at the margins. A few faint hairlines and minor evidence of contact apparently constitute the grade. There is little field-device contrast noted, however: The dies had clearly been in use for a long time, as despite the bold strike numerous peripheral die cracks are seen on both sides, sometimes intersecting one another and indicating a reverse die, in particular, close to shattering. An attractive and interesting example of this issue. Population: 20 in 63 (1 in 63+), 15 finer (5/23).
