Description
Doubled Date 1844-O Half, AU50
1844-O 50C Doubled Date AU50 NGC. WB-103. This is a dramatically doubled date and a significant variety. The following passage is taken from the Wiley-Bugert reference: "The rare and popular blundered date variety is seen with a single pair of dies. The date, 1844, was first punched much too high and into the rock and (is) visible even on coins in Good condition. This blunder proves the four digit date logotype was in use as early as 1844. This tail die, also used in 1845, marks the sole use of a medium O mintmark size in 1844." Very rare in high grades, the Doubled Date is considered an R.5 in AU condition and its dramatic repunching makes it worth a huge premium over a normal date 1844-O. Well struck throughout, the surfaces show light pastel coloration over both sides that gives the coin an essentially brilliant appearance until closely examined. Deeper, charcoal colored patina surrounds the outer devices. From the Richard Genaitis Collection.
