1846 Half Dollar, AU53
Important 6 Over Horizontal 6 Variety
1846 50C 6 Over Horizontal 6, Medium Date, WB-104, FS-301, Die
Pair 7, R.3, AU53 PCGS. The prominent bulge of the horizontal 6
appears at the bottom-left of the upright 6 digit on this lightly
circulated powder-gray example. The 1846/Horizontal 6 is among the
most blatant Mint blunders in the entire Seated half series.
Numismatists today lay many such errors at the feet of Mint
Engraver James B. Longacre, who replaced Christian Gobrecht after
his death in 1844. Longacre was a talented engraver but a hurried
die-cutter.Ex: Summer FUN Signature (Heritage, 7/2013), lot 4985.
