Description

1846-O 50C Medium Date MS61 NGC. WB-105. Medium Date, Recut 6. Sometimes misattributed as an 1846/5, there are actually remnants of an earlier punched 6 both within and outside of the prominent 6. While not a particularly scarce variety, this is a later die state. Additionally, '46-O Halves are very elusive in Uncirculated grades, regardless of which variety or die state the coin might be. Both of the major services combined have only certified eight other pieces in this grade with another 12 in higher grades (12/04). This piece is well struck, especially for a product from the New Orleans Mint, and the fields are semi-reflective on each side. A streak of golden-tan patina bisects the obverse and overlays most of the reverse. Worth a close look.
